Washington Place Names
The Washington Place Names database includes information about the name origins of cities and towns, neighborhoods, rivers and lakes, mountains, and other named places in Washington State. The information in this collection comes from research done by former Northwest Room librarian and department head, Gary Fuller Reese, who also published a book on the Origins of Pierce County Place Names.
The collection contains information on over 8,700 place names. Every attempt was made to track down information for as many places as possible, yet there are many locations in the state for which name origins were not found. In addition, for some places, no final or even “best” name origin was found. For example, Tacoma has been a controversial name almost from when it was first assigned as a geographic point. Therefore, some places with multiple origins have several listed, with no judgement given.
