Exterior of Whitman Elementary School . The new Whitman school was built in 1952 a few blocks away from its original site of South 40th and "M " Streets . Modern and sleek in design , it was very different from the "Big Red School House " originally constructed in 1892 . A powerful earthquake in April , 1949 , damaged the brick school , the first of its kind in the Tacoma School District , and forced the construction of a new Whitman Elementary . Photograph ordered by the architectural firm of Lea , Pearson & Richards ; photograph taken on June 16 , 1953 .
